Blurry pinhole photographs

Reading up on this on the internet, the beauty of pinhole photography is that you get equally sharp pictures from close up all the way to infinity, but depth of field does not equal depth of focus (as you can see).

Somebody suggested using extension tubes to move the pinhole further from the sensor (as the ratio of pinhole size to distance to sensor is important for sharpness). I tried all combinations of my extension tubes when I got home and none of them made any difference (and to be honest the article I read said the same thing).

I suspect that the problem is that it is a digital sensor. The camera has a filter in front of the sensor so light needs to enter the filter (nearly) perpendicular, which is what you get from a conventional lens. But the light from the pinhole is coming from a single point and only the pixels near the centre of the frame will get light coming in perpendicular.

I might get the pinhole optic for my lensbaby and see if that is any better, but I suspect not.

Alternatively, I could get some film for my film SLR and use the pinhole on that. No working out the exposure by trial and error like I’ve been doing on the DSLR ;-)

All set for worldwide pinhole photography day

The pinhole lens for my camera arrived today. As I said the other day, I posted off a body-cap to a company in Birmingham who drilled a hole in it and fixed a metal shim with a 0.3mm hole in the centre of the cap.

The instructions that came with it reckon it is about f/167.

Had a quick try tonight in the garden and I was taking pictures of 13 seconds to 30 seconds exposure. On the left is the picture taken with the camera on the right.

So I’m all set for the Worldwide Pinhole Photography day in Portsmouth, should be fun.

Liberal Conspiracy » Why vote? No point for most voters

I emailled my My MP to say that I would not vote for him at the General Election as he did not attend the Digital Economy Bill debate last night.  Not that he will be worrried, according to
Liberal Conspiracy » Why vote? No point for most voters he is in a safe seat, so I will be following their advice and spoiling my ballot paper.  I urge anybody else in a safe seat to do the same.

Tories drop opposition to UK.gov DNA plans • The Register

I ave already written to my MP because he did not attend last night’s debate on the Digital Economy Bill and now I read that Tories drop opposition to UK.gov DNA plans • The Register – so much for principles.

I just hope we have some decent candidates on May 6th that I can believe in.

Sense About Science | Message from Simon Singh

Simon Singh’s victory in the High Court in his appeal against the British Chiropractic Association is just the first step. As he says in Sense About Science | Message from Simon Singh we need to keep up the pressure on the politicians and political candidates to reform libel law to prevent this sort of travesty happening again.
